I love my A4 spiral-bound sketchbooks, but I also have a lot of smaller sketchbooks that I take everywhere with me. I always have at least one in my bag at all times. It got to the point where I wanted to also have a notebook with me and I started looking for ways in which I could keep everything together.
I stumbled across the idea of a ‘fauxdori‘, and thought it would work really well for small sketchbooks too.
Armed with a heavy-duty craft knife, a metal ruler, a cutting mat, and a large piece of leather I got to work.
I made the template slightly larger than A4 size as I wanted it to wrap around at least three notebooks:
Nervously but firmly cutting through the leather:
Ta-da! Halfway there!
Using a leather punch tool to punch the holes for the elastic which will hold the notebooks in place:
This was the only elastic I had, and I was worried it would fray. I sealed the ends and it has been fine with daily use!
Finished leather cover with Sketchbooks in place:
I have since been experimenting with printing onto leather, and am hoping to have a few of these smaller printed covers up in the shop soon!
