I have always wanted to make ceramic pieces, but do not have access to a kiln. I took part in Shapeways pilot program for porcelain and am very pleased with my test pieces! They exceeded my expectations and the quality and finish are exactly what I was hoping for.
My first experiment was a tiny hexagonal ring dish created entirely in Google Sketchup. I love the nesting geometric Kaleido trays by Hay Design, and these were the inspiration for my brightly-coloured miniature ceramic version.
Once I received this first test piece I felt confident trying something with more detail. I took once of my sketches of an eskimo lolly, modified the outlines and then extruded it to make a 3d model. I was so happy with the result!
The dish is the perfect size for rings and small accessories. The ring pictured is also from my Shapeways store, printed in polished brass.
As porcelain is still a material that is in the testing phase, I cannot yet add any porcelain products to my Shapeways store. However I will have a few of these available at the Craft Central Market here in Wellington on the third of October!
